How Stocknote works

Stocknote publishes two kinds of pages: original research articles written by the author, and automatic data pages built from public sources. This page explains how each is made and where it can be wrong.

Research articles

Research articles are written by the author and published with a ticker, a category and topics. Where a view is stated, it is labelled long, short or neutral as of the publication date. Articles are a snapshot in time: figures and views are not updated after publication unless the page says so, and corrections are logged on the corrections page.

Earnings releases

  • Source. Releases are collected automatically from SEC EDGAR: the earnings press release attached to a company's Form 8-K, Item 2.02. Every release page links to the original document.
  • Extraction. Software reads the company's own press release and picks out revenue, earnings per share (EPS) and any guidance statement. Revenue and EPS growth are the year-over-year changes as stated in the release text. They are not compared with analyst consensus.
  • Adjusted figures. Where a release reports an adjusted EPS, the page says “adjusted”.
  • Checks. Releases that fail basic checks are hidden rather than shown with guessed numbers. Even so, extraction can be wrong or incomplete. Always read the original before relying on a figure.
  • “Why it matters” notes. These short notes are generated by a template-based engine from the extracted figures and the company's previous release. Every number in a note is checked against those figures. The notes describe the numbers; they do not add opinion.

Topics and categories

Topics are assigned to articles automatically by a rule-based tagger that recognises company names, themes and methods in the text. Categories are chosen by the author from a fixed list. Tagging can contain mistakes.

Market data

  • Quotes, key statistics and earnings dates with estimates come from Finnhub and are delayed by up to 15 minutes. Dates and estimates can change.
  • Charts, company overview and technical signals on some pages are widgets provided by TradingView and load only when you ask for them.

Tools

The screener, company comparison, earnings calendar, earnings season dashboard and theme hubs are calculated from the sources above. They add no data of their own. A watchlist is saved only in your own browser.

What this is not

Nothing on Stocknote is investment advice, a recommendation or an offer to buy or sell a security. The author may hold positions in securities discussed. See the full disclaimer.
